What are the requirements for admission?

The completed application form must be accompanied by two letters of reference and the $100 application fee.

Is knowledge of the Italian language necessary?

No prior knowledge of either Italian or English is required for entering grades pre-K through 6th. Special courses in Italian as a second language are offered through 6th grade.  Accelerated English language courses are also offered to students who qualify.

Do only Italian students enroll in the school?

La Scuola d’Italia is an English/Italian bilingual school with an international student population.  Presently, at the Lower School, nearly 60% of students are Americans.

How many students are currently registered at La Scuola d’Italia?

For the academic year 2015-16, the total student body is approximately 300.

How old does my child have to be in order to register for preschool/Kindergarten/1st grade?

  • Students admitted to the Pre-K class must be 3 years old by December 31st of the school year and toilet trained.  Children born in January of the school year and toilet trained may also be admitted by the end of October.
  • Students admitted to Kindergarten must be 5 years old by December 31st of the school year.
  • Students admitted to 1st grade must be 6 years old by December 31st of the school year.  Please note that according to Italian Regulations, children turning 6 years old by March 31st may be admitted to first grade only if they have previously completed 3 years of school (2 years of Preschool and 1 year of Kindergarten).

In which grades do you accept new students?

We accept applications for all grades throughout the course of the year.  However, those applicants wishing to enter the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades must meet La Scuola d’Italia’s academic requirements.

Is there a sibling policy?

Full tuition is paid for the first child.  A 10% discount is applied to the tuition of each additional child (only for a full year term).

Once I have submitted my application, what is the process?

Upon receipt of an application, parents are contacted to schedule an interview.  During this visit, the student will be invited to attend and work with a class of the same age group.

Do you require recommendation letters?

Yes, two letters of reference must be submitted with the application form.

When is the registration deadline?

There is no specific deadline, but it is recommended to apply early in the fall to facilitate scheduling for a school visit and interview.  La Scuola follows ISAAGNY guidelines for notification dates to new applicants.

How do I arrange for a tour of the school?

Families may tour the school at the time of the interview or during one of the Open House events.

Are scholarships available?

Financial aid and scholarships are not available for pre-school students.
Scholarships and financial aid are available to eligible students in other grades.  Awards are determined on the basis of family need.  Interested applicants are referred to the SSS (School & Student Services by NAIS) website for families.  Middle School and High School merit scholarships are available to currently enrolled 5th and 8th graders.

Is there a bus that can pick up/drop off my child from school?

Public school bus service is available for K-5th grade students.  There are 2 buses, east side and west side, with assigned stops.  For 6th -12th grades, students are entitled to a full or half fare metro-card depending on the distance of their home to school.

What opportunities are available for parents to get involved?

There is a very active Parents Association, among other volunteer activities.

What colleges and universities do La Scuola d’Italia graduates attend?

Our graduates attend North American as well as European Union Colleges and Universities.  A small sampling of this list includes: Universita’ Bocconi; Universita’ LUISS; Columbia University; John Cabot University; Macaulay Honors College, CUNY; Birmingham University and Hull University (UK); University of Pennsylvania; New York University; and Harvard University.

Do students have an opportunity to study abroad at the Upper School?

La Scuola partners with other educational organizations to offer our students opportunities for summer language study in Italy.  During the academic year, high school students participate in various Model United Nations projects in the US and abroad.

Is there an after school program?

A variety of activities are offered after school for an additional fee.
